Overview
- For dragons made of elemental energy, see Elemental Dragons.
Dragon energy (also referred to as dragon power) is the life force of dragons and a powerful source of energy. Seven powerful forms of it known as Source Energy are the powers of the Source Dragons. This immensely powerful energy is the source of all natural Elemental Powers in the universe and is connected to all realms flowing through everything and all beings[2] while sharing a connection to soul energy.[3] Thunderfang's corrupted dragon energy, known as Chaos, serves as an informal/artificial Source.
Following the Battle of the Spectral Lands, the Source Dragons of Life, Focus, and Strength withdraw from the Council of Sources, ending the flow of their Source Energy to the Merged Lands.
History
History[]
Background[]
During the War of Oni and Dragon, a dragon known as Thunderfang drew strength from the souls of his foes, including the Oni, to enhance his own powers, one of which was the creation of devastating storms.
The First Spinjitzu Master implored the Source Dragons to bestow upon him their dragon energy. His intention was to harness some of their life force and forge three Dragon Cores, instrumental in thwarting the Coalescence, which threatened to merge the realms.[4]
After the War of Oni and Dragon, when Thunderfang was denied the prestigious title of Source Dragon, he exacted his revenge in the form of a catastrophic storm that ravaged the City of Temples. However, his attack was cut short by the Arc Dragon of Focus, an adversary to Thunderfang and his powers, who struck him with a powerful beam of dragon energy. This attack sent Thunderfang plummeting to the ground, where he was ultimately imprisoned inside Storm Mountain.[5] To initiate his escape from captivity, Thunderfang bestowed his dark dragon energy upon five individuals, who would later be known as the Forbidden Five. Although they did not fully grasp the extent of this energy,[6] they managed to channel it, developing evil abilities, like Shatterspin and Theroxian magic, that allowed them to surpass other Elemental Masters.[7] They subsequently shared these newfound powers with the Wolf Clan when Rox infused the energy with the Wolf Masks.[6] However, the inherently corruptive influence of Thunderfang's energy took its toll, leading both the Forbidden Five and the wolf warriors down a dark path, filled with an insatiable desire for more of Thunderfang's power. The Shatter Dragon had anticipated this outcome, knowing that the Five's descent into evil would ultimately guide them back to him, paving the way for his eventual liberation.[8]
Following the Forbidden Five's exile, the Dragon Masters Egalt and Rontu ensured that the Shadow Dojo could not be open without the energy of a Source Dragon.[9]
At some point, the Kingdom of Imperium began to be powered by the dragons that lived there. However, when Beatrix ascended to the throne, the Claws of Imperium forced the dragons to give their energy instead of sharing it.[10] When the Sixteen Realms merged, the Claws began to hunt any known dragon they could find for their energy, especially the Source Dragons, which would allow Imperium to have control over the Merged Realms.[11][12]
Dragons Rising, Season 1[]
Years after the Merge, Sora occasionally had dragon energy transferred to her by Riyu through Sparks, which unlocked her power of Technology. However, she believed that the dragon was transferring his power to her rather than enhancing it. But Lloyd knew otherwise, as the same circumstance happened to him when he was powered by the Matriarch of the Mountain Dragons to defeat Rapton and the Claw Hunters.[12]
During the Battle of the Second Monastery, Lloyd and Zane discovered that a Source Dragon had been held captive beneath Imperium, serving as the primary energy source for the entire kingdom. The imprisoned Source Dragon generously extended an offer to Lloyd, granting him a portion of his dragon energy, thus establishing him as a conduit for him. Assuming the role, Lloyd successfully activated the portal gate of the Imperium Monastery, allowing the remaining dragons to make their escape into Ninjago.[13]
In order to put an end to the MergeQuakes once and for all, the ninja embarked on a mission to locate the Dragon Cores. However, Beatrix was determined to obtain the Dragon Cores before the ninja so she can use them for a weapon capable of harnessing the dragon energy within the artifacts in order to eliminate the ninja.[4] Nevertheless, Beatrix soon discovered that one of the Dragon Cores had been switched with a counterfeit by Rapton. Despite the potential risks of destroying Imperium, Beatrix instructed Dr. LaRow to create a fourth Dragon Core by utilizing the energy of the captive Source Dragon. When she refused, Jordana insisted on doing it.[10] After some time, Jordana achieved the successful creation of the fourth Core by extracting raw energy of the Source Dragon, making her the first Imperian to extract energy from a Source Dragon.[14]
The new Dragon Core allowed Beatrix to create her own MergeQuakes using the MergeQuake weapon, ultimately leading to the creation of the MergeQuake Storm. However, Lloyd was able to put an end to the MergeQuakes using the Dragon Cores and later used them to free the captive Source Dragon. After Beatrix's reign came to an end, Ras approached Jordana, who possessed a canister containing raw dragon energy, extracted from Imperium's Source Dragon. With the potent energy, Ras and Jordana formed an alliance to aid Ras' master in their ambitious scheme to conquer the Merged Realms.[14]
Dragons Rising, Season 2[]
After Ras and Jordana arrived at the Shadow Dojo, Ras used some of the extracted Source Dragon energy to open the Shadow Dojo, revealing to Jordana why he needed energy from the captured Source Dragon in the first place.
Riyu gave some of his dragon energy to Nya, which created a psychic connection between her and Kai, who was stuck in the Nether-Space. Later on, he would share his energy once more, enabling Nya to harness it with the Crowns of Horns to release both Kai and Bonzle from their imprisonment in the Nether-Space.
Dragons Rising, Season 3[]
After the Forbidden Five agreed to free Thunderfang from his prison, he gave them a gem infused with his energy, stating that it would be useful in their search for the Prismatic Blades. The Five used the gem to corrupt the Dragonians in the Storm Village and grant themselves the ability to fly.
Dragons Rising, Season 4[]
The Source Dragons of Focus, Life, and Strength withdrew from the Council of Sources in anger after the ninja used the Arc Dragon of Focus without their approval. This severed the connection between their respective sources and the Merged Lands.[15] The departure of the Source Dragon of Life also accelerated the deterioration of the Whispering Wood,[16] while the disruption of Source Energy led to the emergence of Elemental Monsters. Dr. LaRow intended to exploit the disrupted Source Energy, particularly from the Weapon of Desolation, to gain control over the creatures.[15]
Abilities
Abilities[]
Dragon energy is normally used by dragon as their life-force and can actually be used to enhance Elemental Powers, but it can be exploited by Source Dragons or those who control them, making them possess several aptitudes for the realms.
- Sparks - Powerful dragons[17] can share a portion of their dragon energy, enabling others to connect with them. This connection grants people access to certain abilities that the dragons can perform using their life force. When the transfer of power occurs, it is visible as white beams of energy.
- Dimensional Portal creation - When combined with Dragon Ivory, dragon energy can be used to open a portal to the Nether-Space.[19]
Source Energy (Balance, Energy, Flow, Focus, Life, Motion and Strength)[]
- Sparks - When a Source Dragon transfers its dragon energy to an Elemental Master, the Elemental Master gains the ability to harness and utilize the Source Dragon's powers. This is because the Elemental Master becomes a conduit for the Source Dragons' life force, allowing them to process and control the immense power of the Source Dragons.
- Dimensiokinesis/Realmkinesis - With their dragon energy, the Source Dragons have control over the realms.[12][13]
- Dimensional Rift Creation - Users of Source Dragon energy are capable of tearing rifts in the fabric of reality, exposing the Ethereal Divide.
- Vacuum Effect - Such rifts are identical to MergeQuakes and have a vacuum effect that sucks nearby objects or people in.
- Dimensional Rift Creation - Users of Source Dragon energy are capable of tearing rifts in the fabric of reality, exposing the Ethereal Divide.
- Elemental Power Creation - Because of their dragon energy,[20] the Source Dragons are the foundation of the Elemental Powers. Each Elemental Power is linked to a specific Source Dragon, determining the type of element that is generated from them.
- Elemental Monster Creation - When mixed with any form of matter, unstable Source Energy can create semi-sentient monsters made of elements.[15]
- Conceptukinesis - The Source Dragons' energies are related to concepts such as Balance, Energy, Life, Strength, Motion, Flow, and Focus, which they can control at will.
Thunderfang's energy[]
- Corruption Inducement - Thunderfang's dragon energy has the power to corrupt those who are exposed to it for extended periods. This is evident in the case of the Forbidden Five, who fell into corruption due to their contact with it. Additionally, the Wolf Clan experienced a loss of goodness in their soul each time they strike the Gong of Shattering while wearing Wolf Masks, which are imbued with Thunderfang's energy.[21]
