City of Temples

Overview

“For each tournament, our city would rotate to another realm and invitations would go out by Spirit Dragon courier to all Elemental Masters there.”

The City of Temples is a retrofuturistic city run by the Fengxian family, who honor the Source Dragons and hold the Tournament of the Sources for Elemental Masters. It's protected by robotic security guards. Before the Merge, the city moved realms every few years around the time of the tournament. It is now permanently located in Ninjago.

History[]

Background[]

When the name of time was new, the City of Temples was established atop a mountain, adjacent to the Dragon Stone Shrine. Beneath the mountain was a deposit of raw Prismatic Ore.[6] The city would receive Spirit Dragons under their serve from the Mythica Tribe, who allowed the city and shrine to rotate into a designated realm trough an ancient blessing,[7] allowing the family of Source Dragon adherents, who oversee the Tournament of the Sources, to conduct the tournament for the Elemental Masters within that realm.[8] However, during one such rotation to the Realm of Oni and Dragons,[9] a grave threat emerged when Thunderfang launched an assault with the intent to obliterate both the City of Temples and its devoted followers. The Arc Dragon of Focus intervened, engaging in a fierce battle against Thunderfang, ultimately leading to the latter's imprisonment.[10] Following the Merge, the City of Temples ceased its rotation to alternate realms and remained firmly situated in Ninjago.[3]

Dragons Rising, Season 2[]

Enter the City of Temples[]

After Bleckt denied the Ninja entry for not having invitations, they tried to reach the city above by flying their dragons and attaching Arin's Off-Road Buggy to the elevator carrying Kizzy. However, the Security Bots intercepted them, triggering a battle. Despite the interference, the rest of the Ninja managed to reach the top, where they encountered Roby - the Games Master of the tournament. Overruling Bleckt’s command to arrest them, Roby—impressed by their televised disruption and confused by the lack of formal invitations—personally invited them to compete. Meanwhile, in the city below, Riyu and Arin were captured by the guards until they unexpectedly reunited with Arin’s childhood friend, Frak.

They Gather for the Feast[]

Frak stops the security bots from arresting Arin and Riyu, claiming his master can vouch for them. He then demonstrates his new Elemental Power of Quake and explains how he discovered and trained it. The rest of the ninja arrive, and Arin introduces Frak to the team. Arin invites him to hang out, but Frak declines—he needs to continue his training. Lloyd informs Arin that they’ve been officially invited to the Tournament of the Sources and will be given a tour of the city.

That evening, the ninja, with Lloyd wearing a kimono, arrive at the banquet filled with Elemental Masters. Later at night, a mysterious figure snuck into the Ninja's dormitory. Riyu woke up and roared, alerting the others just as the figure tried to stab Lloyd. The ninja stop the attacker and unmask it, revealing a malfunctioning bot. Ras and Zur toss down similar bots, confirming a wider threat. Nya asks Tox to examine the weapon, which turns out to be a Gilba Thorn from the Mother GardenZant-Tanz’s domain. This then lead the competitors to suspect he sent the bots with Ras in particular emphasizing that he wanted Zant-Tanz to be thrown out.

Lloyd defends Zant-Tanz, but to ease tensions, Zant-Tanz chose instead to exile himself from the tournament. Roby then told everyone to return to their rooms, though as they left, Nya saw Jay in the crowd and called out to him, attempting to push her way through to reach him but to no avail.

Inside the Maze[]

The elemental fighters and their guests roamed about the City of Temples as they waited for the day's events to formally begin. At nightfall, Roby and Bleckt officially began the Tournament of Sources with the first match featuring Zane against Zur and the following match featuring Nya against Jay. Following Jay's loss however, Ras exiled him from the Wolf Clan and Jay left the city in defeat.

United We Fall[]

Following the evening's matches, the Ninja confronted Ras at his team's quarters to ask about Jay's whereabouts. Ras informed them however that he had exiled Jay following his loss and if the Ninja wanted to find him, they would have to leave the city and the tournament. As dawn rose the next morning, Nya took her frustrations out on the training equipment at the Ninja's headquarters while Lloyd and Zane had a pep talk with Sora and the rest of the Ninja.

For the day's events, Sora was pitted against Kizzy in a high-wire race, and Wyldfyre was pitted against Cinder in a game of capture the flag. Following the matches, Cinder feigned an assault from the Ninja on Foundation Street, hoping to have his opponents thrown out of the games. Although Bleckt was convinced by Cinder's deception, Zane timely invoked a Cavern Run challenge for the Ninja to stay in the Tournament, which Bleckt reluctantly accepted. A few hours later, all gathered together to watch the Ninja's progress in the Cavern Run while Arin went off on his own to investigate the Wolf Clan's quarters where he would find himself being confronted by Ras and learning some hard truths.

Truth and Lies[]

The Ninja were able to successfully complete the Cavern Run, reinstating themselves in the Tournament of Sources. While they continued to participate in the day's events, Arin stayed by himself and at one point walked to the edge of the city and gazed out towards the horizon as he carefully thought over Ras' words. He would eventually seek out his old friend, Frak, for the latter's advice and to warn him about Ras.

For the day's events, at least six matches were held: Zeatrix against Euphrasia; Nokt vs. Tox; Lloyd vs. Mr. Pale; Cole vs. Frak; Nya vs. Nokt; and Sora vs. Cinder. After these rounds, Zeatrix, Nokt, Lloyd, Frak, and Sora progressed into the next rounds. Later that night, Cole found himself awoken by a floating golden orb which then led him outside of the City and towards another monastery hidden atop a nearby cliff.

The Sword Shatters[]

In the morning hours, Lloyd woke up his sleeping teammates, declaring that it was time to begin warmup exercises. Wyldfyre protested, arguing that since she no longer had her Heat powers, there was no point for her to participate in the daily exercises. In response, Lloyd gently reminded her that there was more to being a ninja than just elemental powers, to which Wyldfyre begrudgingly accepted. Meanwhile, Nya was busy packing her bags, having received Lloyd's blessing to depart the city to go after Jay. Later the Ninja returned to their dorm, discovering to their surprise that Arin had returned, leading to a discussion about potential suspects for the murder of the Matriarch of the Mountain Dragons. Following this discussion, Arin journeyed to the Temple City Museum in search of further clues.

Later that evening, the following matches were presented: Frak vs. Zur; Lloyd vs. Arccrack; Algu vs. Teelk; Geo vs. Gorge; Zeatrix vs. Mord; Neuro vs. Nokt; Lloyd vs. Geo; Zeatrix vs. Algu; Sora vs. Chamille; and finally, Lloyd vs. Zeatrix.

Clues and Suspects[]

In the morning hours, Roby and Bleckt went to the Ninja's dorm to check in on Lloyd who was still in a coma following the injuries he had sustained from Zeatrix's surprise attack. Roby expressed his deepest condolences for Lloyd and wished him a speedy recovery, but noted that the games had to continue. After the two left, Arin and Wyldfyre made their way to Roby and Bleckt's office to search for further clues in their investigation of the killer of the Arc Dragons. Meanwhile, Sora competed against Frak in a combat match, defeating the Serpentine who was then cast out of the Wolf Clan for his defeat.

Following the end of Sora's match, Roby and Bleckt returned to their office and were surprised to find Arin and Wyldfyre standing outside, After a brief conversation between Wyldfyre and Roby, the tournament runners continued along their way, but not before Bleckt chastised the two for being absent from their teammate's match. As Bleckt walked off, Arin hurled his notebook towards the office door, managing to jam it into the doorframe right before the door closed and allowing for himself and Wyldfyre to enter in search of further clues. Within the office, the pair discovered a secret room in the basement that they surmised belonged to Bleckt; it was filled with hateful messages and caricatures towards Roby as well as a calendar and various notes demonstrating vigorous adherence scheduling - all hallmarks of Bleckt's character. Now armed with evidence that Bleckt was in leagues with Ras, the two noted that he had now climbed higher in their list of suspects.

Later that day, Lloyd recovered enough from his injuries to attempt competing in his scheduled match against Nokt. Although he gave the match his all, it became increasingly clear to everyone that Lloyd's injuries were taking their toll on him and Bleckt ordered the match to be forfeited as per the rules prohibiting grievously injured fighters from further competition.

Meanwhile, Cole retrieved his mother's mech from the Temple City Museum and departed the City with Arin to cross over to the mysterious monastery he had discovered the night before.

The Final Game[]

In the early hours, Wyldfyre saved Bleckt from a falling brick, though unbeknownst to the latter, the former had intentionally set up the brick to fall so she could swap out Bleckt's ledger with a menu. Although she was unable to understand the language the ledger was written in, she would eventually receive assistance from Zur, who identified the language as an ancient form of Devonian, the langauge of his people.

Meanwhile, Lloyd and Zane oversaw Sora's training with her newly acquired elements. Sora grew frustrated by her lack of progress and familiarity with her newfound powers, though both older ninja encouraged her to figure out how she would use them rather than attempt to emulate the fighters from whom she had received her new powers from. After the training session ended, Sora made her way to the Wolf Clan's dorms in an attempt to apologize and reconcile with Jordana, unaware that she was being possessed by Rox who coldly dismissed Sora's apology as being "pathetic."

As night fell, Sora faced off against Nokt in the final match of the tournament. Although Nokt far outstripped Sora in terms of raw strength, skill, and experience, Sora managed to keep up with her opponent thanks to her intellect and cleverness. In the end, Sora managed to defeat the dark warrior, bringing him to his knees as she prepared for the final blow. The final blow, unfortunately, would never be struck thanks to Bleckt's meddling, causing the platform to shift, rolling Nokt just out of the way. This diversion was enough to allow Nokt to fully recover and then defeat Sora, striking her down with Shatterspin.

As the closing ceremony began, with Roby prepared to bestow Nokt with the title of champion, Wyldfyre and Zur interrupted the ceremony, exposing Bleckt's lies and rigging of the tournament. Disgusted with his uncle's betrayal, Roby invalidated Nokt's victory and declared the ceremony cancelled. In response, Nokt promptly attacked Roby and claimed all of the remaining elemental powers. When Ras congratulated Nokt on his performance and emphasized their next steps, Nokt smiled and informed Ras that he no longer worked for him. At this moment, Rox revealed herself and her possession of Jordana's body, standing beside her brother as the two revealed their intention to release the remainder of the Forbidden Five. In response to this betrayal, Ras summoned Cinder and the rest of the Wolf Clan in an attempt to subdue the dark warriors, but unfortunately, all he accomplished was unwittingly providing the duo with an army. Thanks to her command over Theroxian magic, Rox corrupted the gathered Wolf warriors, and Cinder, bending them to her will as she ordered them to slaughter everyone present.

Elements of Betrayal[]

At the Games Plaza, the powerless Elemental Masters, Ras, and the city's Security Bots fought against the corrupted and empowered Wolf Clan. Meanwhile, Nokt and Rox used this opportunity to escape the city as they headed towards the Monastery of Gates, intending to release the rest of the Forbidden Five. Ras, Roby, Lloyd, and Sora followed afterwards in pursuit of Nokt and Rox.

Following the escape of the Forbidden Five and the defeat of the Wolf Clan, Roby resumed the closing ceremony for the Tournament of Sources, crowning Sora as champion. Following the conclusion of the ceremony, the invited Elemental Masters and their guests exchanged goodbyes as they all departed the City to go their separate ways.
