Souls, or spirits, are the life force of a being, creature, or thing, containing their identity and consciousness. Souls often appear as soul energy, which is tied to a range of abilities.
Before the Merge, souls of disgraced warriors are sent to the Underworld where they become Skulkin. The most wicked of souls were sent to the Cursed Realm while souls that were neither disgraced nor cursed resided in the Departed Realm. Following the Merge, once a soul's physical form is destroyed or reaches its natural end, the soul in question will be sent to the Spectral Lands or meet an unknown fate and it is no longer possible for individuals to be reborn in the Underworld.[1]

Background[]
When the Realms of Creation came into being, souls directly moved on after their death at first. Over time, afterlife realms formed and would take them in. The Departed Realm became the realm of the deceased although there were some ways to escape from it. The Cursed Realm was created to imprison cursed souls and the Underworld became an afterlife for disgraced warriors.[2]
One night drunk, Ronin was approached by an individual named "Sultan Archron", who offered Ronin a deal that he said would cost him no coin. Ronin agreed, not knowing at that moment that he was indebting his soul to the devious Soul Archer.[3]
The following events were undone due to Jay's final wish, and thus, did not happen in the current timeline.
With the Cursed Realm destroyed and its souls sent to the Departed Realm, the Departed Realm fell into disarray. Following the Merge, these two realms were combined to create the Spectral Lands, home to the Well of the Lost, which contained a healing elixir that allows souls to move on. Due to the merging of lands, the region became infested with Soul Suckers. The Departed Souls no longer stayed in the Merged Lands and moved on. It’s unknown whether souls that move on transcend to another dimension, find eternal rest, or are reincarnated.
As Rox was unable to go out the Nether-Space during the Ritual of the Blood Moon without a sacrifice, she separated her soul from her body, projecting it out of the Nether-Space just before the gate closed.[4] While Rox's body remained in the Nether-Space, her soul took refuge in Jordana's body and started to possess the Imperian girl. During the months after the ritual, Jordana was fully possessed by Rox.
After Nokt successfully freed the remaining members of the Forbidden Five, Rox's soul was pulled back to her body, therefore freeing Jordana from her possession.
When Arin traveled to the Spectral Lands to save Ras' life, Morro explained to him that the healing elixir from the Well of the Lost contains special properties which allow souls to move forward to an unknown form of existence, and that it also has the power to heal the living.
Once the Forbidden Five freed Thunderfang, he betrayed them by devouring their souls. Thunderfang also devoured Lloyd's soul after realizing he was a Conduit of the Source Dragons. After Arin defeated him, all the souls he devoured were either released and moved on, returned to their living bodies, or taken with him to the Spectral Lands, where he devoured four Soul Suckers and Morro to begin regaining his power.
Thunderfang used the Forbidden Five and the Spectral Dragonians as his army in the Spectral Lands, where they existed as Hollow Ones, the Five having lost their souls to the Shatter Dragon and the corrupted Dragonians having been killed. He dispatched them to collect souls from other lands during the night, leaving their victims hollowed. Once he amassed enough souls, he aimed to evolve into a Source Dragon. However, his plans were thwarted when the Well of the Lost was destroyed, leading to his defeat. This event caused the spectral Hollow Ones to dissipate, while the others were able to reclaim their souls.
Being imitations of the ninja, the evil ninja lacked souls and thus would not have gone to the Departed Realm upon destruction.[5]
The Overlord stands as the sole immortal entity in the Ninjago franchise, distinct from the mortal souls inhabiting the Realms of Creation. As shown in "A Sinister Shadow," the Overlord remains confined to his void, unable to access the mortal plane of existence and the world without taking on a physical form.
When a ghost from the Cursed Realm was destroyed, they reformed in the Cursed Realm.
Concept art of the Djinn Blade absorbing a ninja's soul
The Djinn Blade was a special weapon that was originally created in the realm of Djinjago. Upon impact, the blade had the ability to absorb the soul of its target, granting the wielder the power to command and utilize the soul’s abilities.
The souls' host bodies are also absorbed, though an early concept for Skybound showed that the bodies of the Djinn Blade's victims remain outside the sword as lifeless husks.[6]
According to Tommy Andreasen, Cryptor "must have a programmed soul like Zane and Pixal" which is what allowed him to be transported to the Departed Realm upon his destruction.[7] However, Zane went to the Digiverse upon his destruction.[8]
It's possible that P.I.X.A.L. went to the Departed Realm when she was deleted from Zane's hard drive in "On a Wish and a Prayer" before the events were undone in "The Way Back."[9]
The NPCs from Prime Empire most likely did not become Nindroids like Zane or P.I.X.A.L. if they traveled to the real world, but rather, their codes were turned into genetic material, the opposite of how the ninja were able to enter Prime Empire by becoming codes.[10] This means that they may now also have souls.
In Ninjago: Dragons Rising, it seems that the base color of the soul is yellow, but it can change if the user of the soul has an Elemental Power, as while the colors of Ras, the Oni, and Morro’s souls are yellow, Lloyd, Cole, and the Forbidden Five’s souls are green, orange, and red respectively. Yellow also serves as the color of the elixir from the Well of the Lost.
