The classic Ninja finally reach the Abyss of Eternal Night, and their ally faces a terrible choice - destroy the Weapon of Desolation or save his people. Back in Ninjago, the young Ninja scramble to find their captured friend and the Loyalist hideout. The team splits up, and Frak and Arin follow an unexpected lead. Sora uncovers the enemy's plan but might be too late to stop it.

Behind the Old Town Courthouse, Arin checks on a groaning Riyu while Euphrasia tries calling Sora. Frak suggests Sora may have turned off her comms to avoid detection while stowed away. Blaming himself, Arin explains that their earlier fight over his accusations regarding her parents caused Sora to head into danger alone. To make matters worse, Riyu discovers Sora's dropped datapad, eliminating their ability to track her. Frak reasons that since General Cryptor is too recognizable to walk the streets of Ninjago City, he must be moving either high in the sky or deep underground. Wyldfyre agrees and splits the team to search both areas: Frak and Arin take the sewers, while Wyldfyre, Euphrasia, and Riyu search the skies using Wyldfyre's Transforming Dragon Mech. As Wyldfyre and Euphrasia prepare to take off, Sora's dropped datapad receives an incoming call. Euphrasia answers and speaks with Cyrus Borg, who asks urgently for Sora. When Euphrasia tells him that Sora is currently trapped with Cryptor, Borg states that the situation is now even more critical and commands them to see him immediately. Euphrasia, Wyldfyre, and Riyu then fly off to meet him.

As Arin and Frak navigate the Ninjago Sewers, Arin laments ruining Sora's improving relationship with her parents. Frak attempts to reassure him that he was only trying to do the right thing, though he grimly adds, "If we get her back". Noting Frak's uncharacteristic pessimism, Arin listens as Frak admits there is something he has wanted to confess to Sora for a long time that he may now never get the chance to say. Before Frak can explain what he meant to tell Sora, he is suddenly cut off as the Loyalists surround Arin and Frak in the darkness of the sewers.

The original ninja wait as Lloyd and Jay urge Zilvar to step up and throw the Weapon of Desolation in, reassuring him that they have his back. As Zilvar hesitates, the Weapon of Desolation telepathically speaks into his mind, causing his eyes to glow red. While Zilvar argues internally that the weapon is pure destruction and that Zeras (now Ras) could be lying, the weapon preys on his guilt over failing his tribe and losing Mei during a past catastrophe. Despite Zane expressing impatience and Lloyd shouting encouragement, the weapon plays a haunting illusion of Mei asking Zilvar why he won't save her. Overwhelmed by grief and desperate to save his people, Zilvar gives in to the weapon's influence, declaring "I will save you all!" as the Weapon of Desolation activates and summons all the Elemental Monsters.

Arin attempts to talk down the Loyalists, but they open fire with lasers. Dodging the blasts, Arin and Frak fight back, with Frak successfully executing an "impossible double twist flying kick" against a Loyalist. When a Loyalist targets Frak, Arin unleashes Spinjitzu that shoots out a wave of chaos energy to knock the Loyalist down. Frak is amazed by the output, though Arin admits he doesn't fully understand why his Spinjitzu is behaving that way. Hearing noises nearby, they investigate a Loyalist armory packed with laser weaponry. Although Frak considers it a dead end for finding Sora, Arin remembers Zeatrix's mention of an access key capable of overriding the comms device's biometric locks. Upon locating and attempting to use the Access Key, they inadvertently trigger a security response. As the Access Key begins beeping and displaying a five-chance countdown timer, Arin and Frak realize they need to rush back to the Monastery immediately.

Frak tries to figure out another way to activate the Loyalist comms device. A hopeless Arin tells him to face reality, believing they will never rescue Sora from Cryptor and placing the blame entirely on himself. Sora's parents came offering to help. Arin points out that without an Access Key, only a Loyalist can make the device work. Without hesitation, Sora's mother provides her biometric scan, which successfully unlocks the Loyalist comm's device. Realizing that Arin's initial suspicions were correct all along, a shocked Frak and Arin start to confront them about their past lies. Ignoring their own exposure, Sora's father simply urges them to go save their daughter.

  • The title of this episode is similar to the 1985 film, Desperately Seeking Susan.
  • The Weapon of Desolation resisting its own destruction is similar to the One Ring's resistance and corruption in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
    • Additionally, the scene where Zilvar talks to his side corrupted by the Weapon is shot similarly to Gollum talking to himself in the same way.
  • When Jay was knocked out by Zilvar he did the yamcha death pose from Dragon Ball Z

Continuity[]

  • This episode marks the first time that Ray, albeit in a flashback, has appeared in Ninjago: Dragons Rising, with his appearance based on his Legacy minifigure from the 71858 Four Weapons Blacksmith, which is his outfit he wore during the first Serpentine War.
    • In addition, Wu is also present in the flashback and his appearance is of his Legacy minifigure from the same set listed above, in which the minifigure is a modern day recreation of Wu's kimono from the Pilot episodes.
    • Kai and Nya also appear and their designs are reused from the flashback sequence in "Fugitives From Madness".
  • It also marks the first appearance of Mister Cuddlywomp since Season 7: The Hands of Time, and the first appearance of Jay as a child ever (excluding "Child's Play"). He was the last of the original ninja to never be seen as a child in a flashback.
    • Jay's appearance is slightly different than what was shown in "Child's Play" as Jay has his freckles he got starting from Season 8: Sons of Garmadon and his eyebrow notch is not present either.
  • Wyldfyre thinking Arin was Cryptor for a second is very similar to Jay thinking Cole was Nadakhan in "Public Enemy Number One" and then again when Jay thought Kai could be an Oni in "Two Lies, One Truth".
  • Arin's Spinjitzu has the ability to shoot out chaos energy just like Shatterspin, continuing the mystery of what his Spinjitzu actually is and its full capabilities. Before Zane scans his Spinjitzu in "Just Under the Surface"
  • Jay can be seen still using his Lightning Daggers he got as Rogue since his golden kusarigama is still missing.
  • When Jay attempts to get through to Zilvar, he references the Pit Master who sold him out to Agent Blake Donovan and the Administration, the suppression of his memories, the lies Agent Donovan and Ras told him, following Ras and using the Gong of Shattering to achieve Shatterspin.
  • This episode marks the final time that the transformation sequence of the ninja going into their Draconus Forms is used.
  • Euphrasia remembers that a part of Cloud Kingdom broke off when Ras and the Wolf Clan attacked it back in Season 2 of Ninjago: Dragons Rising.
  • This marks P.I.X.A.L.'s first appearance since "Monster in the Monastery" it is implied that she was aware that Cryptor may have returned as she is seen damaged at the Cloud Factory that Wyldfyre, Euphrasia and Riyu find her in and Frak mentioned she left a few days before the events of "Ancient History" took place, which may have been her investigating Cryptor's potential return.
  • This episode marks the return of the Nindroid MechDragon, it previously appeared in Season 3: Rebooted over 12 years ago.
    • The design is slightly different from its debut appearance appearing move silver in color and is slightly bigger than the original MechDragon.

  • One of the Ice Monster's has non-glowing eyes.
  • In the flashback of Jay using Shatterspin, the Shatterspin effects present when Jay was charging it up right before Nya used Rising Dragon are now gone.
  • After Jay tries to reach out to Zilvar, more Elemental Monsters can be seen that just randomly showed up.
