Ethereal Divide

“During the Merge, some people were shuffled into pockets of the Nothing Space between what used to be the realms.”

The Ethereal Divide[1] (also known as the Nothing Space[2] or the Dimensional Space) is the expanse that exists beyond the Merged Lands and between other planes of reality.

History

Background[]

Little to nothing is known about the Ethereal Divide, and it is unknown if it ever had a beginning, or will ever have an end. At some point when the Cursed Realm came into existence, a being serving as its living embodiment known as the Preeminent began inhabiting it.

Pilot episodes[]

Weapons of Destiny[]

The ninja used their dragons to travel to the Underworld via their portals and stop Lord Garmadon. Before entering the underworld, the ninja first flew on their dragons through the Ethereal Divide. When the ninja gained enough speed, they left the Ethereal Divide and entered the Underworld.

Shadow of Ronin (non-canon)[]

After Ronin obtained the Elemental Forges and the Primal Fulcrum, he combined them, creating a portal to the Ethereal Divide. The ninja followed Ronin through the portal and used their Elemental Dragons to find Ronin, eventually their dragons phased out, forcing them to find Ronin on foot. As they searched for Ronin, some of his Dark Samurai attacked them. After crossing some fragments of Ninjago, the Underworld, and the Realm of Madness, they found Ronin.

Inside the Ethereal Divide, Ronin planned to open a gateway to the Cursed Realm to bring back Chen and his Anacondrai Cultists, but inside the ninja destroyed the Forges. Ronin, enraged, attempts to fly away on R.E.X. when a massive ghostly arm came out of the Cursed Realm to try to grab him. Ronin escaped and the ninja used their powers to destroy the portal and escape the Ethereal Divide. The Obsidian Weapons were lost in the Ethereal Divide as a result.

Season 5: Possession[]

The Temple on Haunted Hill[]

As the ninja were trying to escape the Temple of Airjitzu, they opened a door and almost fell into the Ethereal Divide. Fearing what might lurk in its depths, they quickly pulled themselves up back into the Temple.

Curseworld, Part I[]

The Preeminent passed from the Ethereal Divide to Ninjago by the portal created by the Realm Crystal in order to begin cursing the other realms.

Season 9: Hunted[]

Lessons for a Master[]

The four ninja and Wu, who was wearing the newly claimed Dragon Armor, traveled from the Realm of Oni and Dragons back to Ninjago to help their friends stop Emperor Garmadon via dragons. They rode Firstbourne and her dragons while passing through the Ethereal Divide.

Green Destiny[]

As the Resistance was being overpowered by the Sons of Garmadon in Ninjago City, a large portal to the Ethereal Divide formed in the sky from which the stranded ninja and their dragons emerged to join the fight.

The ninja passed through the Ethereal Divide in the Land Bounty to reach the Never-Realm in their quest to rescue Zane.

Between Series[]

The Merge: Part 1 (flashback)[]

When the Merge occurred, a massive rift in the the fabric of reality opened up leading into the Ethereal Divide. The rift sucked many objects and inhabitants from the realms in before closing in a massive violent explosion which forcefully combined the realms into one land. While some of the lost inhabitants of the newly Merged Realms were released in the Merge, some remained missing in the Ethereal Divide such as Jenny and Barry.

The Merge: Part 2 (flashback)[]

Following The Merge, events known as MergeQuakes would occur when two realms destabilized and attempted to occupy the same area; tears in the fabric of reality that lead straight to the Ethereal Divide (referred to as the "Nothing Space" by the Administration). The first of these MergeQuakes occurred at the Monastery of Spinjitzu which Kai and Lloyd closed with their Elemental Powers.

Dragons Rising, Season 1[]

The Merge: Part 1[]

After defeating Sora, Arin, and Riyu on the Crossroads bridge, Lord Ras watched a MergeQuake open in the sky before ordering the Claws of Imperium to put the prisoners on a prison train.

Writers of Destiny[]

The Land of Monsters and Cloud Kingdom attempted to merge which opened a MergeQuake rift. Disturbed by the MergeQuake, a tentacled beast passed through it and attacked the Writers of Destiny and Ice Dragons. While Kai, Nya, Arin, and Sora fought the monster Lloyd attempted to close the MergeQuake with a Life beam but was stopped by Nya, who realized the monster couldn't be hurt by their attacks but could be forced back in. After Kai and Nya managed to force the monster back into the MergeQuake, Lloyd managed to close it and send the monster back to its home realm.

Later on, the Land of Monsters attempted to merge with the Cloud Kingdom again which disturbed another tentacled beast. Spotting the monster, Arin informed Kai, Nya, and Lloyd while Sora tried to repair the SA Mark 01 and Euphrasia fought the monster. However the MergeQuake disturbed another tentacled beast who joined in attacking the Cloud Kingdom. After repairing the SA Mark 01 Sora joined Euphrasia in the fight and was shortly after joined by Arin, Lloyd, Kai, and Nya. After forcing the monsters back into the MergeQuake, the Elemental Masters managed to close it with beams of Water, Fire, Life, and Wind as another tentacled beast began emerging from it.

The Temple of the Dragon Cores[]

A MergeQuake occurred in the Crossroads and released a massive fireball from another realm which struck and heavily damaged the bridge, causing an auto accident before the ninja arrived while the MergeQuake released more fireballs. After the ninja rescued the civilians endangered by the MergeQuake, Lloyd closed it with a Life beam.

We Are All Dragons[]

After claiming the fully operational MergeQuake weapon, Beatrix fired a bolt of Source energy into the sky which opened a MergeQuake rift.

The Power Within[]

Dismissing the warnings of Lloyd, Zane, and Nya as lies, Beatrix fired the MergeQuake weapon throughout the Kingdom of Imperium and opened many rifts which sucked in many Imperians. When Wyldfyre shot a heatball at her, the Empress fired the MergeQuake weapon again which resulted in Wyldfyre being sucked into a rift. As she continued to use the MergeQuake weapon, more and more objects and people were sucked into the resulting rifts including a potted plant, Arin's grapple gun, Percival Tartigrade, Riyu, Imperium's power generator, Kai, Rapton, Lloyd's Master Mech, and Arin's Dragon Mech. After confronting her parents, Sora unlocked her True Potential and managed to destroy Beatrix's MergeQuake weapon and Imperium Dragon Core with Technology before she could fire it at Lloyd and Arin. Now disarmed and distracted, Beatrix was forced into a rift by the vengeful Arin's Spinjitzu.

Though she was defeated, Beatrix's repeated use of the MergeQuake weapon during the Liberation of Imperium pushed the MergeQuakes to the tipping point and triggered the MergeQuake Storm. As a result the entirety of the Merged Realms were shrouded in a giant rift which began sucking everything into the Ethereal Divide. While rescuing a dog from the storm, Arin briefly saw his parents through a rift. However, the MergeQuake Storm and MergeQuakes as a whole would be put to an end after Lloyd used the power of the three Dragon Cores to end the MergeQuake Storm and temporarily stabilize reality.[3] While most people and objects sucked into the rifts were ejected unscathed in the Crossroads once the storm was terminated, Beatrix was instead sent to the Land of Monsters after the Ethereal Divide caused her to gain a cybernetic implant on the left side of her face.[4]

Elements of Betrayal[]

After defeating Ras and freeing the rest of the Forbidden Five from the Nether-Space at the Monastery of Gates, Nokt and Rox fled through the portal gate to the Cloud Kingdom with the unconscious bodies of Ras, Drix, Kur, and Zarkt but were quickly followed by Arin. Noticing this, Nokt used Brute Force to destroy the gate in an explosion. In the resulting explosion, Ras, Arin, and the Forbidden Five were briefly sucked into the Ethereal Divide before being sent to different realms, with Ras and Arin being sent to the First Land while the Forbidden Five were sent to an unknown realm.

  • Apparently, the color of the Ethereal Divide depends on which realm a person travels to, because when the ninja traveled to Ninjago, it is a brown and green color and when the ninja traveled to the Never-Realm, it is white.
  • Sometimes the Ethereal Divide manifests as a network of elemental caverns, like in Weapons of Destiny and Shadow of Ronin.
  • According to Chris "Doc" Wyatt, the Ethereal Divide was breached prior to and during/after the Merge, other than what has already been revealed in the show (i.e. the ninja traveling between realms).[5]
  • The Ethereal Divide is a direct reference to the Dungeons & Dragons location known as the Ethereal Plane, which connects all the planes of existence, which are similar to Ninjago's realms. It is described as being a land of fog, which seems similar to the little we see of the Ethereal Divide.
  • It is possible that the Ethereal Divide stretches on for eternity since it has no shape or form.
  • It's similar to the Wood Between the Worlds in the Chronicles of Narnia.
  • According to, Chris "Doc" Wyatt , the interstitial space bubbles only remain intact when there is a living thing contained within them and eventually they collapse if there is nothing contained in them back into the Ethereal Divide.[6]
    • Bubbles usually contained 1 to 4 people, typically in even (balanced) numbers but not always.[7]
    • 30 people was the largest single bubble with the smallest inhabited bubble contained a fern.[7]
    • By the time of Season 4, most were recovered by The Administration with some rare few spontaneously re-emerged by themselves. For example some were found by a group of Mysterium wizards called the Argor Conclave.[8]
