Soul absorption, also called soul reaping and soul draining, is an ability that allows the user to consume the soul of another individual. It can be accomplished with magic and certain objects, but also naturally by other beings like the Preeminent and the Soul Suckers.
History
History[]
Background[]
During the War of Oni and Dragon, Thunderfang gained the ability to absorb souls through magic,[1] effectively killing his victims in the process.[2][3][4] He primarily targeted the Oni, using them as his main source of power.[5] By absorbing a significant number of souls, he sought to amass enough power to transform into a Source Dragon while enhancing his Chaos energy.[6]
Skybound[]
Enkrypted[]
Nadakhan receives the legendary Djinn Blade from his father Khanjikhan, and uses it to absorb and trap the souls of Clouse, Wu, and Misako.
Misfortune Rising[]
After tricking Kai into foolishly using his wishes, Nadakhan uses the Djinn blade to trap the fire ninja in the blade, absorbing his soul.
On a Wish and a Prayer[]
Later on the boat while playing chess with Zane, unbeknownst to Lloyd, Cole, Jay, and Nya, Nadakhan captures him and traps his soul in the blade.
Wishmasters[]
Upon fighting the ninja alongside his Sky Pirates, Nadakhan forces Clancee to wish for Cole and Lloyd to get cast away. Hesitant and frightened by his leader's threats, Clancee reluctantly makes the wish and Cole and Lloyd's souls get absorbed into the blade.
Operation Land Ho![]
After stealing the Djinn blade, Jay used it to free everyone who had fallen to Nadakhan, thus releasing their souls from the blade.
The Way Back[]
Jay used the Djinn blade to capture a Sky Pirate's soul.
Dragons Rising, Season 3[]
The Spectral Lands[]
When trying to flee the Spectral Lands with Morro's help, Arin sees Ras being attacked by Soul Suckers as they begin to absorb his soul. Arin infuses his Returning Blade with Object Spinjitzu and throws it at the Soul Suckers, destroying them.
Chaos Unchained[]
After the Forbidden Five released Thunderfang from his chains, he betrays them and consumes their souls, killing them.
The Shatter Dragon[]
Upon realizing Lloyd is a conduit to the Source Dragons, Thunderfang begins hunting him down with the sole purpose of absorbing his soul to become more powerful so he can confront his sworn enemies. After failing due to several of the ninja's interventions, he finally succeeds and roars in satisfaction and glee as he shouts out to the Source Dragons that he reaped the soul of one of their conduits, and that he's coming for their souls next. Following his defeat at the hands of Arin, he moves on to the Spectral Lands, where he meets Morro. Suddenly, Soul Suckers attack them, and while Morro attempts to protect the Shatter Dragon from them, he swallows their souls much to his shock. He then proceeds to absorb the former ghost warrior's soul as well.
The Hollow Ones[]
Kur and the Spectral Dragonians arrived in Mysterium to absorb the inhabitants' souls, turning them into Hollow Ones. When the sun rose, she and the Spectral Dragonians were forced to flee but arrived back at night when Arin, Sora, and Ras arrived.
Human Resources[]
Arin and Sora recognized Kur and with the Returning Blade, Arin sees the Spectral Dragonians, who he compares to the Soul Suckers he previously encountered. He attempts to fight the Dragonians but realized the ghosts can break Prismatic Steel.
Kur steals Gandalaria's soul just when morning arrives, forcing her and the Spectral Dragonians to leave.
Casket of Bones[]
Drix attacked the Administration to seize the souls of the Administration Agents. After successfully capturing the souls, he returned to the Spectral Lands and deposited them into the Well of the Lost.
The Screaming Earth[]
A Dragonian Scout absorbed Lee's soul, turning him and his clones into Hollow Ones.
Under the Light of a Mechanical Moon[]
Zarkt and the Spectral Dragonians arrived at the Land of Lee, abducting Agent Roderick Allen's soul after emerging from a portal from the Administration. As the Spectral Dragonians extracted souls, Zarkt used his flute to gather them. Meanwhile, Rox returned to the Well of the Lost to transfer more captured souls, fueling Thunderfang's ritual.
After their retreat, the ninja were puzzled about how the Forbidden Five had returned, especially since Thunderfang had killed them by capturing their souls, just as he had done with the Oni's trapped souls before losing them. Sora speculated whether their life forces had been drained even in their ghostly forms, given how hollowed they appeared.
Nokt arrived at the Land of Lost Things, where he and the Spectral Dragonians absorbed the souls of the Finders, except for Geo.
The Vault of Focus[]
Nokt arrived in Imperium and used his magical flute to absorb the souls extracted by the Spectral Dragonians. While fighting Cole, two Spectral Dragonians grab him, allowing Nokt to steal the ninja’s soul through his flute. After seeing Kai and Frak defeat the Spectral Dragonians, he attempts to kill them, but Kai throws his Reveal Blade at the flute, which releases most of the Imperian souls. When Nokt went back to the Spectral Lands and transferred the souls he still have into the Well of the Lost, Thunderfang scolded him for his failure. Rox then appeared and transferred her stolen souls into the well, which erupted with power.

Trivia[]
- Chen’s method of using the Staff of Elements to steal the Elemental Masters' powers shares similarities with Thunderfang's way of absorbing the souls of his enemies as both their victims' energy is drawn out of their bodies in similar ways and patterns. The only difference is that Chen absorbs Elemental Powers while Thunderfang absorbs souls.
