Rontu

Overview

This article is about the dragon. For the set, see 71842 Rontu the Master Dragon.
“You faced much in your young life, and have lost much. Your master, teammates, friends. And because of that, you fear you won't be able to protect everybody. Your heart is too big, Lloyd, which is exactly why you must lead the ninja. It is why you are the one to carry on the legacy of your beloved Master Wu.”

Master Rontu is a retired dragon warrior from the Tribe of Fallen Leaves, and one of the two Dragon Masters. She is the first fang teacher for the Rising Dragon Technique that she invented alongside her partner Egalt, and is Riyu's mentor.

History

History[]

Background[]

Originally part of the Dragons of Fallen Leaves, Rontu was mentored in the art of Spinjitzu by Ekesian Coldfang the Wise in her youth and had a part in the War of Oni and Dragon, as a low-ranked soldier in the dragon army.[2] During the war, Rontu met a Dragon of the Northern Spiral named Egalt,[4] who became her companion for the rest of her life. Together, Egalt and Rontu became greatly recognized ninja warriors and as time passed, they rose to become martial art teachers known as the Dragon Masters, dedicating themselves to training dragons in the ways of the ninja such as Spinjitzu. They invented their own technique derived from Spinijtzu and based on the concept of motion: Rising Dragon, which turned out to be a perfect counter to the Forbidden Five's Shatterspin, which is based on strength. As the Forbidden Five threatened to conquer the realms, Rontu and Egalt called for help from Gandalaria, the High Sorceress of Mysterium. With Gandalaria's assistance, a spell was crafted to banish the Forbidden Five to the Nether-Space. Rontu and Egalt bravely faced their enemies, using Rising Dragon to defeat them and send them into the Nether-Space. The victory over the Forbidden Five marked the end of their reign of terror, but Rontu and Egalt knew that their dark legacy must be sealed away for good. Together, they condemned the Forbidden Five from memory.

Dragons Rising, Season 2[]

Force From the East[]

Upon the successful completion of all three tests, Rontu appeared before the ninja, offering a respectful bow and celebrating with Riyu by delivering a high five using her tail. Inquisitively, Lloyd asked about the ancient teacher he had heard about. Egalt interjected, suggesting that Lloyd was not the most astute person, to which Rontu promptly clarified that both she and Egalt were the instructors the ninja had been seeking. Rontu asked about the ninja's unexpected presence at their training plateau, noting that it had been a considerable time since anyone had attempted the tests there. Lloyd explained that he had received a vision from the Source Dragons, prompting Rontu to clarify that the divine beings only intervene in mortal affairs when circumstances were truly grave. Lloyd contended that the ninja's problem might indeed qualify as serious, as they needed to acquire the skills necessary to counter Shatterspin. Intrigued, Rontu sought confirmation, which the ninja provided. Lloyd then disclosed that Ras had reformed the Wolf Clan with the intention of liberating the Forbidden Five, a revelation that left both Egalt and Rontu in shock. Rontu emphasized that the Merged Lands would soon confront an unspeakable evil stemming from the Forbidden Five.

As the ninja recounted the history of the Forbidden Five's defeat, Rontu and Egalt revealed that they were the ones responsible for their prior downfall, attributing their success to the Rising Dragon technique. The notion that the Forbidden Five could resurface during the Ritual of the Blood Moon astonished both dragons. They recalled their efforts to ensure the Shadow Dojo could only be accessed through Source Dragon energy, and were taken aback to learn that Ras had harnessed the energy of the Source Dragon of Energy after capturing him alongside Imperium. This revelation led Rontu to regard Ras as a formidable adversary. Lloyd was confident that the Dragon Masters would help the ninja achieve victory over Ras. However, Rontu and Egalt expressed their doubts about fighting alongside the ninja due to their age. Rontu proposed that they could train the ninja to learn Rising Dragon instead. Egalt was skeptical about Rontu's suggestion. Rontu defended her choice by stating that the ninja had proven themselves worthy by passing their tests. Egalt reminded Rontu of his promise not to train humans because of a previous incident. Rontu argued that the threat of the Forbidden Five returning would allow them to destroy the Merged Lands. She emphasized that all their hard work to banish the Forbidden Five would be in vain, putting their legacy at risk. After some hesitation, Egalt agreed to help train the ninja. Rontu then told the ninja that they needed to act quickly, as mastering the Rising Dragon Technique was very difficult, and training would start the following day.

The Spell at the Waterfall[]

Following the ninja's combat displays, Rontu explained that Rising Dragon was more than just a fighting technique for countering Shatterspin, but rather a guiding principle, with the rank of a third fang Ninja being awarded to those who have been recognized as having attained it. Rontu explained that she was the first fang teacher, and she would teach Sora and Riyu the basics of Spinjitzu, as the martial art is the basis for Rising Dragon. When Wyldfyre asked which group she belonged in, Rontu praised the former’s skills and spirit, but gently informed her that she could not be taught for the time being due to her broken leg and urged the young girl to get some rest so her injuries could recover. This suggestion disappointed Wyldfyre, who responded bitterly that she was only being left out because the Ninja team already had a fire Ninja, much to Rontu's surprise as she explained that Wyldfyre was the Master of Heat, not fire. Seeming slightly disappointed that Wyldfyre didn't even know her own element, Rontu added that the girl still had much to learn even after her injuries had healed.

Later, Rontu observed Sora and Riyu's training, which consisted of spin-kicking through a series of hoops at increasing elevations. Rontu was very supportive of their efforts, complimenting them on their technique and offering constructive criticism as to how further attempts could be improved. When Riyu struggled making through even the first hoop, Sora asked Rontu if the course was suited for him, accidentally offending Rontu when she suggested that Riyu was "just a dragon." After Sora quickly apologized and clarified her statements, Rontu shrugged off Sora's concerns over Riyu's difficulty with the course, noting that she had trained many dragons before with the same course and she had trained on the same course as well when she was the same size as Riyu. When Sora continued to question Rontu's teachings, stating that dragons couldn't perform Spinjitzu, Rontu immediately proved Sora wrong and demonstrated her own Spinjitzu tornado, explaining that she learned from Ekesian Coldfang the Wise, who had learned from Urd Leatherwing, who in turn learned from the First Spinjitzu Master.

As the training continued, Wyldfyre would interrupt the session, having covered herself in mud and plant matter and claiming to be a Mucoid Warrior. Rontu saw through Wyldfyre’s disguise and once again praised her spirit, but reiterated that she could not begin training until she had fully recovered from her injuries, much to the Master of Heat’s disappointment.

To Mysterium[]

Watching over Sora and Riyu's training, Rontu tried to encourage the two about potential and finding some calm.

Later, Rontu watched as Egalt demoted Arin for half-blinding the former when he was struck by a rock and looked towards Arin sympathetically.

Fugitives From Madness[]

Rontu and Lloyd shared tea together while discussing the latter's visions and his fears surrounding them. Rontu explained that Lloyd's visions were the result of his exposure to Source Dragon energy and showcased potential futures. Although Lloyd was determined to find a way to stop the visions from happening again, Rontu sympathetically informed him that instead of preventing the visions, he should find harmony with them. Moments later, Lloyd was struck by a vision of the Blood Moon and Rontu ordered the Ninja to return to training, as their time was running out.

Around sunset, Rontu stood alongside Egalt and watched Kai's attempt to perform Rising Dragon, which ended in failure. Rontu briefly gave Egalt an aside glance when he dismissively commented on Kai's performance, but she said nothing. When Kai tried again, this time performing alongside Nya, Rontu notably wore an impressed smile as she watched the siblings' performance and Kai's subsequent successful performance of the Rising Dragon technique. At sundown, she and Egalt officially awarded Kai with the rank of third fang ninja in recognition of his success, during which Egalt apologized for his previous misgivings and cynicism towards the Ninja. Moments later unfortunately, the Blood Moon rose, allowing Rontu and Egalt only enough time to wish for the Source Dragons to be with the Ninja before they were both turned to stone.

Rising Ninja[]

After the Blood Moon passes, Rontu and Egalt revert to normal.

Enter the City of Temples[]

Sometime after the Ritual of the Blood Moon, Zane came to the Training plateau of the Dragon Masters to learn the Rising Dragon technique from them.

Sometime later, Lloyd returned as well to the plateau to pick up Zane, watching as Rontu and Egalt threw rocks at Zane to make him harmonize with the universe and master Rising Dragon. Their efforts pay off as Zane successfully executes the technique. The group then learned about the demise of three Arc Dragons and the potential threat posed by the killers, who are also participants in the Tournament of the Sources, suggesting they may target the Source Dragons next. Lloyd proposed that the Dragon Masters take on the role of mentors for the ninja during the tournament, but they declined. When Lloyd expressed doubts about being ready to serve as the Ninja's master, Rontu and Egalt decided to attack him, forcing Lloyd to evade their strikes. Zane briefly attempted to intervene, but Rontu held him back with her tail and silently shook her head before joining in with Egalt. Lloyd met the challenge head-on and defeated both dragons, leading them to address him as "Master" Lloyd. When Lloyd again expressed his doubts, Rontu assured Lloyd that he was ready, and that his life experiences so far have prepared him well for the task and the journey that is to come.

Dragons Rising, Season 3[]

The Hollow Ones[]

Rontu was waiting for the ninja and their dragons at the entrance of the training plateau. When they arrived, Rontu sadly answered to Lloyd, who asked if it was true that Egalt was about to die out. She led the group within the plateau, where Egalt lay dying and the dragons stood in a circle around the dying master with the ninja. Egalt exchanged his last words with his last students, thanking them for their presence and the lessons they taught him. Finally, the old dragon dedicated his last words to Rontu, his lover and companion of many centuries, and she said goodbye to him in return, letting tears flow from her eyes as the wise dragon master breathed his last. The dragons present mournfully roared to the sky, expressing their grief and respect for the deceased dragon.

As the ninja were about to leave the plateau, Riyu asked Rontu if she wanted to to come and live with them at the monastery, an offer the Forest Dragon declined while thanking the young dragon, explaining to him she had to stay living in the place where she resided for so many years with Egalt. Rontu watched the ninja and the dragons leave before walking through the door to the plateau.

Sometime later, while the dragons were resting in the monastery's stables and Riyu was bored by the absence of Arin and Sora, Rontu's roar echoed before she entered the cave. She told the young dragon that she had felt very lonely all alone on the plateau, and she had therefore reconsidered his offer to live in Ninjago. She added that another reason was she wanted to finish the training she had started giving him, thinking it would be Egalt’s wish. Rontu ended up hugging Riyu and Zanth, showing that she was welcome.

Between You and Lee[]

Rontu trains Riyu out in the training ground, which conflicts with Frak's own training, to the point where they end up damaging the training course, and Mr. Frohicky tells them to leave. Rontu and Riyu head to the junkyard in the Crossroads to train, only for Kreel to return to see the destruction, but she lets them continue on.

The Screaming Earth[]

Rontu and Riyu continued their training the Monastery of Spinjitzu. However, Riyu failed midway through the training. Rontu told him that he should not be afraid to fail as Frohicky came and asked where Cole, Kai and Frak are.

For Whom the Bell Tolls[]

After Wyldfyre and Sora arrived in the dragon stables through the portal gate, they saw Rontu, much to their surprise. After explaining them the situation, she told Riyu to stay in the monastery and focus on his training instead of going Djinjago. However, she then let him go to Djinjago after he said something to him about saving the Merged Lands.

When Doves Cry[]

As Ras stormed the Monastery of Spinjitzu in search of Wu's studies, he was confronted by Rontu, who launched an attack using her tail. Ras scoffed at the Dragon Master, asserting that he was not intimidated by her age and labeling her as decrepit, all the while reveling in the fact that he once imprisoned the Source Dragon of Energy. Indignant, Rontu accused Ras of lacking the honor befitting a Tiger Tribe warrior, suggesting that Zarkar would be deeply ashamed to witness Ras' current state. To Rontu's horror, Ras brandished two Source Dragon Icons, which she deemed impossible. Ras unleashed an assault with the dual weapons, forcing Rontu to evade his strikes until he landed a blow with his hammer, eliciting a pained roar from her. As Rontu attempted to retaliate, Ras dodged her attack and countered with a powerful swing of his hammer, sending her crashing against the roof and incapacitating her as she plummeted to the ground.

Dragons Rising, Season 4[]

The Whispering Wood[]

In the aftermath of Ras' attack on the monastery, Rontu was left seriously injured from her fight with Ras, with Barry and Jenny tending to her injuries with help from Frohicky. As Cole was investigating the aftermath, he was horrified to see the injured Rontu. Geo, who had received a broken leg during the attack, tells Cole that while he'll be okay, he isn't sure if Rontu will recover.

Seed and Soil[]

When Riyu's life was threatened after being poisoned by a Mutation Monster, Rontu (still injured) sensed it and began to feel guilty for letting him go on his adventure instead of protecting him. She thought she had failed in her mission as a teacher; and lost all hope for her student and herself. As Mr. Frohicky was still providing her with care, the Dragon Master confessed to the frog that her time had soon come just as Riyu's. A concerned and worried Alfonzo couldn't believe what she was saying about Riyu, claiming it could be hallucinations due to her pain. Rontu then insisted that her student was indeed dying.

Some time later, Alfonzo listened to the old dragon’s heartbeat, which he felt was getting weaker and weaker.

Rontu finally let herself die after losing all hope for herself and Riyu, which led to her soul being sent to the Spectral Lands. There, she briefly reunited with a spectral Egalt, who tells her that her time had not come yet and that she must show her student, Riyu, the way as the current cycle depends on it. However, Rontu felt Riyu dying and believed he would not make it. Egalt encouraged her not to give up hope before she returns to the living world in her body, coming back to life.

Just Under the Surface[]

After Rontu came back to life, Fritz and Spitz wanted her to play with them, only for her to decline as Geo and Frohicky brought her fetid salamander broth. After drinking the broth, she told them that she spoke to an old love and find a new purpose on her life, even though Frohicky insisted that it was the broth. Then Jenny and Barry arrived in the monastery and said there is a monster attack on the Crossroads, much to Rontu and the others' shock.

Birthright[]

Following the Battle of Imperium, Rontu was pleased to see Riyu mastering Spinjitzu upon reuniting at the Monastery.

Trivia[]

  • Rontu and Egalt are the first dragons seen using Spinjitzu.
  • Rontu and Egalt are the first dragons to be shown with the ability to speak naturally, unlike the Dragon Matriarch and the Source Dragons, who use telepathy to communicate.
  • Chris "Doc" Wyatt first claimed that Rontu and Egalt both originate from the First Land[6] and later claimed that they were both born in the regions of their tribes. So, he probably meant that their ancestors came from the Realm of Oni and Dragons, which is the native realm of the dragons.[7][8]
  • When asked if Rontu and Egalt are officially married or are in some sort of dragon equivalent of a marriage, Wyatt replied, "Some equivalent."[9]
  • When asked on why the Blood Moon petrified Rontu and Egalt, Wyatt replied that it is due to their involvement in the Forbidden Five's banishment.[10]
  • Rontu is one of the rare concepts that was introduced in the show before receiving a set. For this reason and for likely others, her set version is very inaccurate to the show. When asked about which design came first, Dimitris Stamatis chose not to provide an answer.[11]
    • Her set version is more similar to her appearance in Bonzle's story than her true appearance.
  • Rontu and Riyu are the only two dragons to have been seen crying with tears. They both cried for the death of one of their loved ones, respectively Egalt and the Matriarch of the Mountain Dragons.
